What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids - also referred to as piles - are abnormally enlarged veins around the anus or lower rectum.

Hemorrhoids (piles) are caused by too much pressure put on the veins in the rectum forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them.

Other names for hemorrhoids are: varicose veins of the rectum, lump in the rectum, piles, rectal lump.

The correct spelling is hemorrhoids or haemorrhoids - although many are misspelling it as: haemorrhoid, hemeroids, hemerroids, hemmeroids, hemmerroids, hemmoroids, hemrroids, hemoroids, hemorrhoides, hemorroids, hemroids.

Hemorrhoids can develop due to a genetic predisposition to hemorrhoids weakness in the walls of the veins in the anal area.

Pregnancy, significant overweight, heavy lifting, sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time also contribute to the development of hemorrhoids.

Once they become inflamed, hemorrhoids can itch, bleed, and cause pain. Unless treated properly hemorrhoids only tend to get worse over the years.
